A little older, but the price was right - nothing. It’s a ZTE Z981, a bit of a beast with a 6" screen, and I got it from a co-worker who recently upgraded. It was acting weird and unusable, but a quick reset seems to have fixed everything. I don’t know if it was a virus or something else, but it seems to be OK for me. Now I have my music/video player I was looking for a couple of weeks ago, and apparently will handle my 128gb microSD cards without issue . It uses USB-C, so that’s going to take a little getting used to since I now have only one cable. Now to learn Android all over again since it’s been years since I switched to iOS.

My experience with ZTE is lots of weird and unstable. They're great as long as you reset them every 2-3 weeks.

You tried turning it off and on again!
It’s super effective!

What do you think this is, a C-Class wagon?
That had been tried, but something a little more drastic was necessary. In addition I wanted to get all of his stuff off and setup my own accounts.

Looks like you have some kind of antivirus software running with a persistent notification. That will do a nice job of making the phone slower. I suggest turning it off.

My wife had a cheap ZTE ZMAX 2 that was mostly alright but did experience some occasional wonkiness. We replaced it with a Moto G5+ that she's much happier with. My sister has a ZTE Axon 7 that she's been totally fine with.

You know, it’s funny. I just recently purchased a new phone (should arrive today) since my current phone doesn’t like to make calls anymore. This phone too is USB-C. I had a USB-C phone like 4 years ago, but not since then. Anyway, the point of my post is that I have a ton of Micro USB cables around (I usually buy in bulk). They make adapters to convert a Micro to USB-C. The best solution vs buying new cables, in my opinion

Thanks. I’m still getting used to Android again, so these tips are quite helpful. This device is more of a plaything/MP3 player and won’t be used as a phone, but it would be nice to get as much performance out of it as possible.

That’s what I was thinking, and so I ordered a 6-pack of those last night. Thanks to Mophie cases , even my iPhones use micro USB, so adapters to existing cables and such just makes sense.

My wife actually had the unlocked version of the predecessor to this phone. Neither is particularly fancy and at least on the unlocked version there’s not too much extra junk added on. But go through the apps and if there are any games or other random apps, see if you can uninstall or disable them.
To do this, go into the app drawer, and if there’s an app you want to get rid of, press and hold it then drag it up to the top of the screen. You should see some kind of options to uninstall it and/or App Info. If you only see App Info, this means it’s a built-in app that you can’t uninstall, but if you go to App Info for that app you should at least be able to disable it. So, for example, that antivirus thing, it’s not helping you, and if you can’t uninstall it, at least disable it.
I use Nova Launcher to replace the home screen on all my Android devices, and Gboard for the keyboard.

I had the Axon 7 Mini. It was pure misery.

The mini was similar to the other assorted ZTE low/mid-range phones but the regular Axon 7 had solid guts, awesome speakers, and ZTE did/does a good job of keeping the software updated.
